Fuel Saving Tips

With the cost of fuel skyrocketing, fuel saving has become a high priority in the trucking industry. Both companies and owner/operators alike are doing everything they can to cut fuel costs. Below are some of the easiest ways to reduce your fuel consumption.

  • Reduce Your Speed. One of the best ways to conserve fuel is to reduce your speed. Studies have indicated that fuel consumption increases over 2% for every 1 mph over 55 mph. Reduced speeds always result in better mileage.
  • Use Cruise Control. Cruise control is an aid to optimal engine performance and can increase fuel economy by as much as 6%. Cruise control works particularly well in hilly terrain.
  • Reduce Idle Time. Reducing the time your engine is idling is an effective method for saving fuel. Its good to shut the engine down after three minutes of idle time.
  • Control Engine Speed. Controlling your engine speed by upshifting at the lowest rpm possible has been proven to reduce fuel consumption. Keep your rpm lower by driving in the highest gear possible.
  • Maintain Your Tires. Tires that are inflated to the proper psi and aligned correctly will require less energy which translates to better mileage.
  • Plan Your Route. Charting the best route to reduce mileage and travel time is a simple way to conserve fuel. Some fleets use software that automatically determines the most efficient route.
